HTX Fire 2020 moved to 13-6 on the season, with an 5-0 run this weekend. Not too many teams have the opportunity to win 2 tournaments in the same weekend, however, that is exactly what Fire did. After playing in a round robin for the Primetime Crosby tournament early Saturday they proceeded to Houston to play in the Houston It’s On Tournament. Yes, these young ladies can’t get enough of hoops.
In the Primetime event, Fire had the rare opportunity to play their own age bracket. In the 1st game, they defeated Skyrise 45-2 and followed up that performance with a 46-15 win over TNBA.
Following the Primetime event, Fire played in 3 games in the HIO tournament, Saturday event and Sunday morning. After taking 1st in their pool, they met the Houstonians in the championship game Sunday afternoon. The game remained close and saw the score change leads several times. With the game tied at 35 with 40 seconds to go, a Houstonian foul put Ana Rodriguez on the foul. She hit the back end of two free throws to take the a one point lead and the championship win.
The 5 game undefeated weekend streak, led by DeYona’s 76 and Ana’s 29 points, saw HTX outscore its opponents 196 – 61 and improved their season record to 13-6. Quite the display from a team that still has potential to get even better.
